UPDATE: <\/b>The discussion on the shipyards proposal was postponed at the last minute in Tuesday\u2019s city council meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 direoF body-paragraph\">The topic was pushed back to the next city council meeting because members wanted to make sure the right people are available to answer questions from the council when it is discussed.<\/p>\n<p><strong><i>ORIGINAL STORY:<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 direoF body-paragraph\">On Tuesday evening, after more than a year in the making, Jacksonville City councilmembers will hear a proposal for the Shipyards along the St. Johns River, which includes building a new luxury hotel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 direoF body-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m so excited because this is what we want to see, economic development and movement,\u201d said Councilman Reginald Gaffney, who represents District 7 in downtown Jacksonville.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 direoF body-paragraph\"><i><b>RELATED: <\/b><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/news\/local\/duval-county\/legislation-jacksonville-jaguars-performance-facility-shipyards-project-be-introduced-soon\/FCWYVEB7BNFNLI3USAV5TZBKOI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><b>Legislation for Jacksonville Jaguars\u2019 performance facility, Shipyards project to be introduced soon<\/b><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 direoF body-paragraph\">The plan now hinges on their approval.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 direoF body-paragraph\">It would include a Four Seasons hotel with dining, retail and office space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 direoF body-paragraph\">\u201cI think that\u2019d be great,\u201d said neighbor Larry Glass. \u201cYou know, anything to bring activity back down to the downtown, especially since they did remove the Landings. That stuff would be a great idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 direoF body-paragraph\">The Downtown Investment Authority gave the $400 million project the green light back in early July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 direoF body-paragraph\">It would involve moving a part of Metropolitan Park West, and adding a new park along the Riverfront. But look. When economic development starts coming, others start coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 direoF body-paragraph\">So, if you build it, will they come?<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 direoF body-paragraph\">Kristi Sweeney, an associate professor of sports finance and economics at the University of North Florida, says yes; but to keep them around, stadium renovations and residential projects are key.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 direoF body-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s kind of the cart before the horse,\u201d she said. \u201cFor me as a taxpayer and as a fan of the Jaguars, I would rather see the investment into the stadium itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-xb1qmn-0 direoF body-paragraph\">The city itself will not comment on this until the council has had a chance to review the proposal, which you can find <a
